THE BOX
Maurice found a box one size too small, which is the size he wanted. Arthur circled it four times, called it inspecting, and took it the second it was unattended. Then the box went flat, and they sat in the square anyway. Somebody studied this. Max could have told them for free.

FOUR CATS. ONE FAMILY.
It started with Benjamin. A Florida kitten who decided the house was his, along with everyone in it. I got here a few months later — born in Mississippi, carried out of a flood, and found at six months in a pet-store cage wearing the name Mr. Boots. That name lasted exactly as long as the ride home. I've been Maximus ever since. Benjamin and I had nine years.
The house didn't stay quiet. Two more found their way in — one born in a flooded planter bed in the front yard, one who came up the fence line like he was late for an appointment. The chaos, the love, the stories that followed — I kept records of all of it.
And just like that, Miami had its 305 Cats.
